5 Pro-Life Advocates Convicted In Federal Court For Protesting Infanticide

On Tuesday, 5 pro-life activists were found guilty of violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, or FACE Act (a Clinton era rule) which has been used as the justification lately for criminally charging pro-life advocates. The defendants, Lauren Handy, Will Goodman, John Hinshaw, Heather Idoni, and Herb Geraghty were arrested for taking part in a pro-life activism event at a Washington DC abortion center in October of 2020.

This abortion center is well known for performing late-term abortions. This is also the same clinic where 115 deceased preborn children were found outside the clinic in a waste box.

The defendants could end up facing up to 11 years in prison and up to $350,000 in fines as punishment. According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), the 5 defendants were found guilty of engaging in felony conspiracy against rights and the FACE Act. The court claims that they forcefully obstructed the entrance to the clinic and restricted movement and access. The lawyer (from the Thomas More Society, a pro-life law firm) for the defense claims that:

“Some simply kneeled and prayed at Santangelo’s facility, some passed out pro-life literature and counseled abortion-minded women, and others roped and chained themselves together inside the facility.”

According to the DOJ, the case was investigated by the FBI field office in Washington DC. This is not the first time that pro-life advocates have been the target of FBI investigations. Mark Houck, a pro-life advocate, had his home raided by FBI agents in September of 2022 and was arrested in front of his wife and 7 children.

Houck’s wife described how 25-30 armed FBI agents swarmed their home with weapons drawn claiming they were there to arrest Mark Houck for “federal assault” at an abortion clinic. When she demanded to see a warrant, she claimed “they said that they were going to take him whether they had a warrant or not.” Mark Houck was later found not guilty of the federal charges against him.

The recent level of aggression from the Biden DOJ against pro-life advocates has sparked notable outrage amongst pro-lifers and conservatives in general. Some notable conservatives such as Michael Knowles from the Daily Wire have noted that there appears to be a double standard in regards to how the DOJ decides to enforce the law.

They claim that there appears to be little to no punishment for BLM rioters and climate change activists who block off streets and destroy small businesses, however there are harsh consequences divvied out to people who protest infanticide.
